Chemical aerosol-fog interaction and its biogeochemical impacts on the Namib Desert Ecosystem

Climatic regimes ranging from the hyper-arid Namib Desert to the cold Benguela Upwelling System describe Namibia. Here, fog and low clouds are typical features affecting the coast and inland, where they contribute more water volume than rainfall. They also act as a medium and vector to supply and regulate the flow of critically limiting resources (water, nutrients, and light), to sensitive ecosystems. However, the chemical mechanisms influencing fog formation, composition, and its ability to solubilize aerosol nutrients are not well understood. In this talk, I provide an overview of my thesis and project, which seeks to develop a process-based understanding of aerosol-fog chemical interactions and their associated impacts on the local ecosystem biogeochemistry. I also discuss the measurements of aerosol particles and fog during two intensive campaigns at coastal and desert sampling sites in different seasons to maximize the fog occurrence while differentiating their composition.
