Abstract

I employ and further develop methods from complexity science to characterise past & present Earth system dynamics. Complex systems are as diverse as they are fascinating. I pursue a strongly interdisciplinary approach, bridging between natural, engineered and socio-economic systems. In particular, I analyse spatiotemporal interactions and temporal characteristics in time series data using complex networks and recurrences. With my research, I would like to contribute to a better understanding of the growing impacts of climate extremes on ecosystems & society.

As an ESA Living Planet Fellow, I am currently working on my postdoctoral project 'Earth Surface Impacts of Hydrological Extremes along Global Atmospheric River Networks'. Here, I address several intriguing research questions: What drives climate extremes? How do heavy rains caused by atmospheric rivers drive changes on the Earth's surface? How can network representations help to disentangle & model these complex interactions?
