Dr. Joel Rindelaub: Microplastic over the Southern Ocean
With this presentation we would like to offer you the opportunity to present our results of research about microplastic over the southern ocean. Our invited speaker will present his latest findings and projects, followed by stimulating discussions.
Titel: Microplastic over the Southern Ocean
Lecturer: Dr. Joel Rindelaub
School of Chemical Sciences, The University of Auckland
While plastics have been detected in remote locations across the planet, there remains uncertainty in the mechanisms governing global microplastic transport. Airborne sampling across locations in Aotearoa New Zealand has revealed relatively large concentrations of microplastics, consistent with production from the nearby marine environment through wave-crashing mechanisms. With high uncertainties in the reported values of environmental microplastics, the use of pyrolysis GC/MS in our work has allowed for quantitative determination of seven different polymers, helping to inform possible standardization of microplastic analysis. The impacts of atmospheric microplastics on health and climate warrant future research.
