Doktorandenseminar
PhD-talk: Ankush Kaushik
Analysis of atmospheric nano and micro-plastics in urban area with Py-GCMS: An Overview
Nano- and microplastics (NMPs), including tire wear particles (TWPs), have emerged as a very important global atmospheric pollutant over the past decade. Limited studies have examined the abundance and fate of NMPs in airborne particles, a potential respiratory and oral exposure source. Most research focuses on the mass concentration of deposited particulates, while submicron-suspended particles that directly impact human exposure are understudied. As part of the current study, NMPs were collected through active sampling in the submicron (PM10 and PM2.5) range and were measured as mass concentrations using pyrolysis-gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS). NMPs measurement in mass concentration is a standard method used by the WHO when drafting legislation to determine the exposure to the general public. The present study provides a very reliable method of quantifying multiple synthetic polymers in size-segregated suspended particulate matter, along with comprehensive data analysis and health implications, which can be used to investigate the fate, distribution, and toxicology of NMPs in the environment.
