Managing spatio-environmental trade-offs of wind power deployment

Wind power deployment is a key strategy to mitigate climate change. However, it often faces local opposition due, inter alia, due to disamenities for local residents and negative impacts on wildlife. This talk will provide an overview of the societal and environmental challenges and trade-offs related to wind power deployment as well as potential regulatory approaches to address them. It primarily builds on evidence gained for Germany in the context of the Junior Research Group "Sustainable deployment of renewable energies with multiple environmental impacts – Policy strategies to address environmental trade-offs of the German energy transition" at the University of Leipzig and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ.
