Measuring ultrafine particles with electrical methods

Aerosols can be measured with many different methods. For ultrafine particles (UFP), one interesting method is to charge the particles and use the tiny currents that arise. Interesting aspects of such devices compared to more traditional instruments are the potential for low cost, miniaturization, and longterm low-maintenance operation.
Depending on the complexity of the design, different things can be measured, with different degrees of robustness and uncertainty: lung-deposited surface area, average particle diameter, number concentration or (a rough) particle size distribution. I will mainly focus on general aspects of electrical measurements, different device designs, miniature instruments and longterm ambient monitoring.
